THIS IS NOT A PLACE TO TAKE YOUR CANTONESE MOTHER TO (Not that I did, I'm just saying my mum would loathe this place-it's not "real canto"!!) This is posh bastardised cantonese food, and it's all about the sharp/sexy setting (although the food was also good, the manager is a flower drum veteran!)
Quick run-down: San Choi bao (Which I'm convinced is not actually a Cantonese dish-never seen it in HK or a "real" Cantonese restaurant), but it was "nice", the entree special was spiced lamb stuffed in Chinese donut-definitely a winner. The "black rice" was just their name for special fried rice-it was LOVELY.
The duck was GREAT, the stir fried steak a bit sweet for my liking. Surprisingly, I was absolutely stuffed after this meal. I couldn't even take dessert. This was a good way to celebrate my last glass of wine before embarking on OCSOBER!!
The main waiter was pretty cool, he was definitely channelling studio 54 with his suit (hahahahaha...)...
Overall, this is a great restaurant-it's a bit of fun and what Melbourne needs if it wants to be on track in terms of developing a cosmopolitan feel instead of the boring safe-havens people are perpetually drawn to. I see a growing demand for this type of place, ie. a place that wasn't afraid to go with a decadent/sexy setting and seemed to have spared no expense in achieving it. (Although, they didn't top Shannon Bennett's Ferrari white leather seats).
Unfortunately, it was pretty dead for a Thursday night!- basically, until this place gets a glowing Age write-up it may remain quite dead. We Melbournians are a wary breed! It's still very young, only 2 months old. I'll be back!

it's not supposed to be canto, its run by some Shanghai person
I thought that the evening at Mahjong Black was excellent. The waiters attentive and the food delicious. The entress were great. Although we both had the duck and the serves were so large we had to miss out on dessert.
A wonderful experience!
